How it works

Production of goat polyclonal antibodies

Goat polyclonal antibodies are produced in much the same way as polyclonals from other host animals. Like other mammalian hosts, goats produce IgG isotype antibodies that are well suited to a broad range of research applications including western blotting, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and ELISA.

Production begins with immunisation using a specific antigen sequence, which triggers a sustained immune response. Goat antibody titres are typically high, and can be further elevated through secondary or tertiary immunisation cycles. Once the immunisation programme is complete, antibodies are collected from serum and purified to research grade.

Host advantage

Why use a goat host?

The primary advantage of goat‑derived polyclonal antibodies is serum volume. Compared to smaller host animals such as rabbit or mouse, goats yield considerably larger volumes of high‑concentration serum per extraction. Fewer bleeds are required to produce larger working quantities of antibody, which translates to greater lot consistency and more cost‑effective production at scale.

Higher serum yield
Compared to a rabbit, a goat can produce 7 to 8 times more serum, and the total amount of IgG in it is several times higher than in rabbit serum. This means fewer animals are needed and more antibody can be generated per production run.
Broadest species coverage
Goat polyclonals offer validated reactivity across up to 17 species including human, mouse, rat, bovine, porcine, rabbit, sheep, chicken, canine, feline, equine and simian. This covers almost any model organism in use in a typical research lab.
Multi‑epitope recognition
Polyclonal antibodies recognise multiple epitopes on the target protein, resulting in a stronger, more robust signal compared to monoclonals – particularly useful for WB detection of low‑abundance targets and for applications where antigen retrieval may mask individual epitopes.

Typical applications

Western blotting
Polyclonal antibodies are routinely used in Western blotting to detect target proteins, with the multi‑epitope recognition often producing strong, clear bands even at low expression levels.
Immunohistochemistry (IHC)
The broad epitope coverage of polyclonals makes them well suited for IHC, where antigen retrieval can sometimes mask individual epitopes – having multiple binding sites increases the chance of successful staining.
Immunoprecipitation (IP)
Polyclonal antibodies are effective for immunoprecipitation because the mixture of antibody clones can bind multiple sites on the target, improving capture efficiency in pull‑down assays.
ELISA
In sandwich ELISA and other plate‑based assays, polyclonal antibodies are often used as capture or detection reagents, where their ability to recognise multiple epitopes enhances assay sensitivity.
