Recombinant antibodies, or rAbs, are monoclonal antibodies produced in vitro from synthetic genes rather than through animal immunisation and hybridoma technology, making their production more humane and efficient than traditional monoclonal antibodies.

How it works

How recombinant antibodies are made

Producing a recombinant antibody begins with synthesising the genetic sequence that encodes the antibody of interest, rather than immunising a live animal. That synthetic gene is cloned into an expression vector and introduced into a host cell line, which is cultured to manufacture the antibody at scale. Across our range, the host listed for a given product refers to this expression system rather than an animal that was immunised, and includes mouse, rabbit and human antibody sequences expressed in host systems such as CHO cells.

Produced without animals or hybridomas
Because the antibody gene is synthesised and cloned directly, recombinant antibodies do not require an animal to be immunised or a hybridoma cell line to be maintained.
