Lyophilized Antibodies

Freeze-dried format for longer shelf life and simplified shipping

Lyophilized antibodies are freeze-dried: water is removed from the frozen antibody solution under vacuum, leaving a stable solid rather than a liquid. This format eases shipping temperature requirements and extends shelf life, and the antibody is reconstituted in buffer before use.

How it works

Freeze-drying removes water under vacuum

Lyophilization freezes the antibody solution and then reduces the surrounding pressure so that the frozen water sublimes directly from solid to gas. The resulting dry powder is reconstituted with the recommended diluent before use. Gentle mixing or rocking dissolves the powder fully; shaking is avoided as it can cause foaming and damage the antibody.

Why use lyophilized antibodies?

Reconstitute before use
Add the recommended diluent, then gently mix or rock the vial until the powder is fully dissolved rather than shaking it, which can cause foaming and damage the antibody.
Longer shelf life when stored frozen
Left unopened and stored frozen, the freeze-dried format can remain stable for years without losing activity.
Avoids freeze-thaw damage before use
Because it stays dry until reconstitution, the antibody is not exposed to repeated freeze-thaw cycling that can degrade a liquid stock over time.

Typical applications

Immunohistochemistry (IHC)
Immunohistochemistry is the most common validated application in this range. Lyophilized antibodies are used for tissue staining, with over 2,600 antibodies in our catalogue validated for IHC.
Immunocytochemistry (ICC) and Immunofluorescence (IF)
Lyophilized antibodies are used in ICC and IF for cellular localisation studies. The stable powder format allows researchers to prepare fresh antibody solutions on demand, reducing waste and ensuring high signal-to-noise ratios.
Flow Cytometry (FC) and ELISA
For quantitative assays and cell-surface marker analysis, lyophilized antibodies provide a reliable reagent that can be reconstituted to precise concentrations, minimising variability between assay plates and across different runs.
