Neuroscience

Astrocyte and glial markers for identifying and characterising the non-neuronal cell populations of the central nervous system. GFAP is the standard marker for astrocyte identification and reactive gliosis, connexin-43 forms the gap junctions that electrically and metabolically couple astrocyte networks, and S100B is a calcium-binding protein highly expressed in astrocytes that also acts as a neurotrophic factor supporting astrocytosis and axonal growth.

Cancer Studies

Markers used to characterise tumour growth, invasion and the hypoxic tumour microenvironment. EGFR is a receptor tyrosine kinase overexpressed in several solid tumours, cyclins A and B1 mark distinct phases of the cell cycle, HIF1A accumulates under the low-oxygen conditions found in solid tumour cores, and MMP2 degrades extracellular matrix components during tissue invasion and metastasis.
