Biotin (Vitamin B7) is small enough to conjugate onto a secondary antibody quickly and without disrupting the antibody's binding function. Biotinylated secondaries are paired with a streptavidin or avidin-based conjugate to generate signal amplification in ELISA, immunofluorescence and western blot, useful where accurate detection of low-abundance proteins is needed, and are also used in protein purification workflows. Two Conjugates for the Most Common Biotinylation Needs
A goat anti-mouse IgG (H&L) biotin conjugate is the standard secondary for detecting mouse-raised primaries by western blot, IHC, immunofluorescence and ELISA when paired with a streptavidin or avidin-based detection conjugate. A goat anti-rabbit IgG (H&L) biotin conjugate covers the equivalent role for rabbit-raised primaries, the two most commonly used host species for primary antibodies across these assay types.

Anti-mouse biotin secondaries detect mouse-raised primaries in western blot, IHC, immunofluorescence and ELISA, paired with a streptavidin or avidin conjugate for the detection step. Whole IgG (H+L) conjugates cover general mouse-raised primaries, subclass-specific conjugates such as IgG1 and IgG2a isolate a single mouse IgG subclass, and kappa or lambda light chain conjugates detect the light chain shared across mouse antibody classes.

Biotin-Conjugated Antibodies for Hepatitis B Research
Unlike the host-species secondaries above, these biotin conjugates bind directly to Hepatitis B viral antigens rather than to another antibody, for use with a streptavidin or avidin-based detection step in IHC, immunofluorescence and ELISA. HBsAg (surface antigen), HBeAg (e antigen) and HBcAg (core antigen) are available as both polyclonal goat conjugates and monoclonal mouse conjugates.

Pairing a biotinylated secondary with a detection conjugate?
A biotinylated secondary antibody needs a streptavidin or avidin-based conjugate, such as streptavidin-HRP or streptavidin-AP, to generate signal, since biotin itself is not detectable. This two-step biotin-streptavidin system gives greater signal amplification than a directly conjugated secondary, which benefits assays detecting low-abundance targets.
