What is AKT2?
AKT2 is a putative oncogene which encodes a protein from the serine/threonine subfamily of kinases, which are involved in signalling pathways. The AKT2-related protein is a general protein kinase which phosphorylates several other proteins and is also implicated in Insulin signalling.
Where is AKT2 found?
On cellular level, AKT2 can be found both in the nucleus and cytoplasm, and having low tissue specificity, it is detected in all tissues throughout the human body.
What role does AKT2 play in disease?
Being an oncogene, AKT2 takes part in the tumorigenesis of cancer cells, furthermore, its over expression contributes to the maligant phenotype of a subgroup of human ductal pancreatic cancers. Apart from that, defects in AKT2 are proved to cause susceptibility to breast cancer and insulin-related diseases such as NIDDM and HIHGHH.
