Tissue Specificity Gender- and strain-specific expression in kidney (at protein level). Predominantly expressed in females, the expression among strains decreasing in the following order: FVB/N > NMRI > Balb/c > 129 Sv/J > C57BL/6. Expressed at very low level in liver, kidney and spleen of both male and female C57BL/6 X CBA hybrid mice.
Function A cytochrome P450 monooxygenase involved in the metabolism of fatty acids. Mechanistically, uses molecular oxygen inserting one oxygen atom into a substrate, and reducing the second into a water molecule, with two electrons provided by NADPH via cytochrome P450 reductase (CPR.NADPH-ferrihemoprotein reductase). Catalyzes the hydroxylation of saturated carbon hydrogen bonds of fatty acids. May act as a major omega- and ommega-1 hydroxylase for dodecanoic (lauric) acid in kidney. Catalyzes with low efficiency the epoxidation of 11,12-double bond of arachidonic acid.
