What is EIF4EBP1?
The Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E-binding protein 1 represses the initiation of translation that serves to regulate the activity of EIF4E by blocking its assembly into the eIF4F complex. It also mediates protein regulation via hormones, growth factors, cell stress and others, which signal using the mTORC1, Insulin signalling and MAP kinase pathways.
Where is EIF4EBP1 found?
EIF4EBP1 is present both in the nucleus and the cytoplasm, and is located within the 8p11- p12 genomic locus. In normal tissue, it is expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, salivary gland and non-keratinized squamous epithelia. Under physiological stress, the hypophosphorylated protein located in the latter compartment can isolate eIF4E.
What role does EIF4EBP1 play in disease?
Over-expression is typically in a many human cancers, especially in breast cancer. Studies have proven that EIF4EBP1 plays a significant role in carcinogenesis.
