Tissue Specificity | Expressed in lymphoid tissues, primarily in B-cell areas. In the lymph nodes, strongly expressed in the cortex and in both primary and secondary follicles. In other lymphoid tissues, primarily found in the marginal zone of the spleen, the follicles in the Peyer's patches and the medulla of the thymus. Detected on resting splenic T-cells (at protein level). Also expressed in nonlymphoid tissues, such as lung and thymus, as well as, at very low levels, in kidney, liver, peritoneum and testis. Isoform 1: Expressed in brain, heart, spleen, lung, liver skeletal muscle, kidney and testis. Isoform 2: Expressed in heart, spleen and kidney. |
Function | Ligand for the T-cell-specific cell surface receptor ICOS. Acts as a costimulatory signal for T-cell proliferation and cytokine secretion.induces also B-cell proliferation and differentiation into plasma cells. Could play an important role in mediating local tissue responses to inflammatory conditions, as well as in modulating the secondary immune response by co-stimulating memory T-cell function (Probable). During pregnancy, may function to skew the cytokine of maternal T-cells toward immunoprotective Th2 phenotype. |
