Polyclonal antibodies

Polyclonal antibodies are secreted from different B cell lineages in the body of a suitable mammal, like a mouse, rabbit or goat. Due to their origin, polyclonal antibodies can bind to different epitopes of the same antigen.

To produce them, an animal is immunised over a period of several weeks, resulting in the B-lymphocytes producing immunoglobulins. When the immunisation cycle is completed, the antibodies can be either obtained from the serum or can be further purified from the rest of the serum proteins.
